  It's hard to imagine you've not seen Google's doodle guessing training (or their other experiments) but it's just another example of how little information you actually need to create a recognizable image, though Canvas also shows this off, but it has the benefit of material information.   I use Mailgun myself, but https://emailoctopus.com might be worth a look. Like Sendy they also use Amazon SES, so should be pretty cheap. And then you wouldn't have to deal with hosting it yourself, unlike Sendy. They say they have a developer API so maybe you can get metrics from that.
