Once I got the basics down with duolingo and kept improving I added some vocabulary and spaced repetition programs - my favorite was clozemaster. Ultimately I was using duolingo, clozemaster, 1 on 1 tutoring through verbling.com, and got to do immersion programs in Colombia and Mexico. That took me to a conversational level. Started with Duolingo before I got too committed to the language, confirmed I was interested and dedicated to daily learning and so got a textbook that had available audio (often found on youtube after some digging), and saw the most improvement when I joined a language site that had lessons.
