Maybe try Bitsbox? It teaches Javascript by making games. They can share the games with their friends, and it also leaves a lot of room for them to modify the games using what they learned. It teaches a lot of programming skills that are useful later. There is also Google's CS First, that's free and has a lot of different projects. Of course, server administrators may require an identity verification to let you register an account (e.g. university, governement), but that's handled by them, not Matrix.
