Maybe try Bitsbox? It teaches Javascript by making games. They can share the games with their friends, and it also leaves a lot of room for them to modify the games using what they learned. It teaches a lot of programming skills that are useful later. There is also Google's CS First, that's free and has a lot of different projects. Oh yeah, it's pretty bad. We'll throw in media queries at some point to make it a large map with a list of messages beside it. Radar Chat is almost entirely useless on desktop since it's rare that they have high resolution GPS, but there are some use cases.
