Maybe try Bitsbox? It teaches Javascript by making games. They can share the games with their friends, and it also leaves a lot of room for them to modify the games using what they learned. It teaches a lot of programming skills that are useful later. There is also Google's CS First, that's free and has a lot of different projects. You don’t necessarily have to rely on those plug-ins. If you’re comfortable with code, you can edit the CSS directly or add custom code without touching the main CSS file.
