Maybe try Bitsbox? It teaches Javascript by making games. They can share the games with their friends, and it also leaves a lot of room for them to modify the games using what they learned. It teaches a lot of programming skills that are useful later. There is also Google's CS First, that's free and has a lot of different projects. I am pretty sure K12.com is a public school, as is connections academy. Connections Academy has a lot of negative reviews and they operate under several different names but are virtually 1 company.
