Another way I'd get confidence in someone's abilities is if they've made bug bounties on bugcrowd.com or hackerone.com, for example.   I started on TryHackMe!, then started zerotomastery.io hacking course setting up my first VM. I got two free courses on hackersacademy.com. I'm in networking limbo, because I'm fascinated by the internet protocol suite.
