  What is the reason you are trying to go custom? https://circle.so this is probably the best platform I have seen. Big and small companies use it (even webflow) so it has great adoption works well. They also provide several examples and boilerplate. I don't want to waste time writing a 404 page, but I can just use this one (just picked the first example I found on wrapbootstrap)...
