The title undersells the change a bit in my opinion. By default, mastodon now encourages new users to sign-up on https://mastodon.social which has caused a bit of a kerfuffle in the fediverse. Personally, I'm largely ambivalent to the change; I understand the reasoning, and it's what https://element.io has been doing for https://matrix.org since the beginning. Your best bet is probably matrix, the most user friendly client iirc is element. Source: about 1 year ago
I used breather.com to rent a space for job interviews a few years ago and it was perfect. It looks like they don't have much available now due to covid. Source: almost 3 years ago
It's more for office spaces but maybe peruse through https://breather.com/ and see if there is something that can be shifted to what youre looking for? Source: almost 3 years ago
Paid: I have never used them so I can't vouch for them but there's something called Breatherwhere they rent out meeting rooms in the city. I think it's designed for people to meet with their clients or collaborate (not sure why they wouldn't just use their own office but maybe for freelancers?) not really sure buty ou can check their website out.
