If you want a good free software I'd recommend familyecho.com - you can import/export family trees and I also think there's a share function if you and your friends want? It does also calculate the closest relation between two people automatically. Spreadsheets and Genealogical numbering systems help a lot IMO! But if you'd like a free, simple, and fiction friendly (aka no error messages for DOB's) I personally use familyecho.com! Source: over 1 year ago

I find that reflecting on my experiences and going out of my way to really analyze the pitfalls and things done correctly helps a lot. I normally use coggle.it to mind map the whole experience overview and then which elements of the project seemed to be improvements and which parts where potentially poorly executed.
