Get insights from your PDFs without uploading the files — the app’s OCR engine processes the text and AI analyzes it locally. Get answers quickly and save time!
Know exactly where the answers are coming from as PDF Pals provides you with not just the answers to your questions but also cites the sources for said answers from your documents.
Sometimes you need to research a broader topic and just one PDF is not enough. In PDF Pals, you can chat with multiple PDFs at once and get your answers quicker!
Your PDFs stay on your Mac, no uploads are required. Additionally, the app automatically redacts the sensitive information it detects in your files. There is no in-app analytics either.
You can customize your experience in PDF Pals — pick response temperature, AI chat model, change response language, use markdown, and more.

I first started building the app in the browser, using PDF.js and Download.js to take a PDF and edit it, and then download it to your computer. - Source: dev.to / 3 months ago
I'd think opening a PDF in your browser would be at the same risk-level you associate with going to any random URL. On Firefox at least, I'm pretty sure the built-in PDF viewer is simply JS parsing and rendering the PDF anyway -- nothing with elevated permissions: https://mozilla.github.io/pdf.js/. - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
We use Mozilla's PDF.js via the pdfjs-dist NPM module to load pages from a PDF file. The loadPdfPages function reads the PDF file and extracts its content. It returns an array where each object contains the page number and the text of that page. - Source: dev.to / 10 months ago

It depends a lot on the GPT client (third-party application). My app (BoltAI) does support web search (via Google Search) and web browsing (built-in) but not chat w/ PDF functionality. I built another app[0] specifically for that use case. So I guess if you need an all-in-one kind of functionality then ChatGPT could be a better choice.
