  I just do my pleasantries and then share the British Council Flashcards for Kids page https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/flashcards - I use them even with adults. I ask them to chose a topic, or I just choose 'Food' or 'Home' as a starting point. Then I literally go through the flashcards one by one until I can tell whether they can read in English, what their pronunciation is like, and whether they know... Source: about 2 years ago

  2) If they are real beginners, whether they are adults or children, use some of these flashcards https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/flashcards and see if they can read the words and answer simple questions about the pictures. That usually makes 20 minutes fly by at least ;) There are many other really good resources on the British Council website. Source: about 2 years ago

  Https://circle.so/pricing/ I would guess even if DDG protects your privacy, it would use information (perhaps search and or site history) the browser is broadcasting regardless to filter results it pipes to the end point. For example I never see quora results (honestly it's been some years so I'd forgotten they existed still) as some members in this thread were annoyed with and paid to be done with them ...   What is the reason you are trying to go custom? https://circle.so this is probably the best platform I have seen. Big and small companies use it (even webflow) so it has great adoption works well.
