FreeFileSync https://freefilesync.org/ I have been a happy user for years and have made a donation too. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • Which synchronization tool are you using together with the pCloud Crypto Folder?
FreeFileSync messed up my pCloud database a couple times at first (causing disappearing files in the Crypto Folder, mirroring of the same files over and over again). Pcloud support provided an easy way to fix the database. To fix the root cause, one needs to exclude FreeFileSync's temporary files from the backup: pCloud Drive > Settings > Backup/Sync Exclusions, exclude sync.ffs_lock and *.ffs_tmp. Source: 7 months ago
  • Why are file backups so slow on Windows 11?
As per Apprehensive_Arm_754 answer below, https://freefilesync.org is the solution to my particular problem, since it allows all kind of simple rules and logic to apply, so I can make sure that the copy only happens in one direction, and only ever by file date etc. Much appreciated. • Why are file backups so slow on Windows 11?

  • Is it possible to sync Calibre configuration between Mac and Windows continuously?
It was me, I'd probably play around with setting up shared folders of preferences and plug-ins and whatnot on something like dropbox or Google Drive. There are various folder sinking tools on both platforms such as free file sync on Windows. Since they are two completely different platforms, I don't know how interchangeable some of the preferences or plugins would be. I haven't used a Mac in a 100 years. Source: 8 months ago

  • Just got a new M2 Pro after my 2016 became outdated. What are your first steps to setting up a new computer?
If you haven’t already, this is the time to install a tool like yadm and get your computer configuration into version control. Your command-line tools can be managed by yadm directly, your system settings can mostly be managed with a yadm bootstrap script that runs things like defaults write, and the software you install can be managed with a Brewfile that the yadm bootstrap script uses to install software with... • System 76 Linux script to set up a new PC including the personal profile and prefered software installs
I personally use YADM. It's basically a git repo on my home folder, that only tracks what I explicitly set. And you can setup bootstraps to do what you said, install a bunch of stuff or make custom changes. In it's essence, it's a set of bash/sh files that are executed sequentially when you launch the yadm bootstrap command. Source: about 1 year ago
