No one cares where a writer went to school or prison, they only care that you can write. You could proofread everything from CVs to manuscripts and academic theses, depending on what sounds exciting for you. My best piece of advice is to figure out your niche (health, finance, tech, lifestyle etc...) and approach a few brand name blogs or publications and ask if you can write an article for them for free to publish on their site.
