  • Ask HN: Which "open-source alternatives" have succeeded?
    Fairly well known on HN by now but Krita is also excellent and simple image editor and painting app like Photoshop was 20 years ago https://krita.org/en/. - Source: Hacker News / 2 days ago
  • Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients
    Well, there is Serif's suite: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/designer/ (There's also a Photo and page layout app) or the open-source stuff: - https://krita.org/en/ - https://inkscape.org/ - https://www.scribus.net/. - Source: Hacker News / 26 days ago
  • Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients
    These are all valid alternatives with real world use, but none of them are Photoshop, and that's kinda the problem we face. Krita - https://krita.org/en/. - Source: Hacker News / 26 days ago
  • Photoshop ToS grants Adobe access to user projects for 'content moderation'
    I migrated away from Adobe after Photoshop CS6 which I believe was the last release before they switched over to a subscription only pricing model. If you're looking for a Photoshop alternative to break away from the incredibly user hostile relationship with Adobe I can heartily recommend either Krita (open source) or Pixelmator (Mac only). Pixelmator Pro is my daily driver for image related work and is incredibly... - Source: Hacker News / 28 days ago
  • Paint.net
    Check out Krita[0]. It's what I used after leaving Windows - a little different, maybe 25% more complicated, but has everything you need. If you just want a MS Paint replacement, KolourPaint[1] is the way to go [0] https://krita.org/en/. - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago

  • Rnote – An open-source vector-based drawing app
    Please note that the original app was Xournal [1]. The one you link is a rewrite of the orignal (in C++) and is called Xournal++. [1] https://xournal.sourceforge.net/. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • Ask HN: When did you stop using printers and why?
    I do the using Xournal [1] which is tailor-made for creating annotations. It leaves the PDF as is, saving your edits to a sidecar file (*.xoj) which when loaded pulls in the original PDF. It exports edited documents to 'real' PDFs with selectable text etc. [1] https://xournal.sourceforge.net/ (packaged by most distributions). - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • Is there good way to apply a hand written signature to a pdf in linux?
    If you don't mind the signature being raster (not vector), I've used Xournal for this in the past. It's extremely lightweight and easy. Just open the PDF file with Xournal, draw the signature, and then export it to PDF (Control + E). This will not rasterise the PDF itself (to the best of my knowledge), but rather just superimposes a layer containing your signature on top of the original PDF. Source: about 2 years ago
  • The Xournal ++ app
    Xournal++ exists since 2013. Maybe you typoed and by your comment about abandoning you were referring to Xournal without the ++? The Xournal website even suggests to try Xournal++. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Adobe Acrobat not provided by the university, how do you read/edit PDFs?
    Xournal works pretty well for me on GNU/Linux. You just have to turn on the "Legacy PDF Export" option. Source: almost 3 years ago
