- If you want a native encrypted cloud storage, one of the better priced ones is Mega. The free tier gives you up to 20GB to use. Here's a referral link if you want extra free storage a well. It's still E2EE, but not open-sourced. They do, however, have an audit on their encryption and source codes. I too have always been interested in such devices, and am also now in the Linux world. (My default distro is Manjaro with xfce). I'm currently considering an Astro Slide Or a Galago Pro, but availability of both devices is spotty. Everything you've said suggests that something like the Galago would serve me better. The fix is open-source firmware, like Coreboot or LinuxBoot. Incumbent PC-compatible vendors aren't too interested, but there's more than enough room at the table for offshore and onshore vendors to use open firmware as a feature.
