It really is hard to leave Gmail when all of your data has been conveniently stored therein. This is one of Google's retention strategies and it is indeed brilliant. That said, there's a vast number of self-hosted alternatives like Stalwart Mail (email) [1], Immich (images) [2], NextCloud (Google Docs) [3], etc. [1] https://stalwa.rt [2] https://immich.app [3] https://nextcloud.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
Good open source self-hostable alternatives exist! https://nextcloud.com/ (no affiliation, just a longtime happy user) is great for file sharing and even collaborative online document editing. Migrate to a good host like Krystal.uk. The difference is night and day. Then, host the file with a CDN like https://bunny.net or https://keycdn.com. Source: about 2 years ago
Use any hosting on the sidebar, and a CDN like bunny or key. Otherwise you'd get banned from a web hosting plan, either from DMCA or auto file uploads.
