OpenAlternative is a community driven list of open source alternatives to proprietary software and applications. The goal of the site is to be your first stop when researching for a new open source service to help you grow your business. It will help you find alternatives and reviews of the products you already use.

I’ve always been a fan of open source software and I’ve always wanted to contribute to the community in some way. I thought that creating a list of open source alternatives to proprietary software and applications would be a great way to give back to the community.

  • AdNauseam – clicking ads so you don't have to
I think the ads we run on https://officesnapshots.com are good quality (we sell and host them). We have traditional banners as well as micro ads where we highlight and link to the specific products found in the office design projects we publish. The latter are very helpful for designers in the industry as they are 100% contextual. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Can Ads Be GDPR Compliant?
My website https://officesnapshots.com does this. Our niche is office design content and we sell advertising primarily to office furniture manufacturers. The ads are hosted by us and are sold directly. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: Who runs a small/medium website supported by ads?
My website https://officesnapshots.com We sell and host our own advertising which are static images. The goal is to match the ads to the content and have the content be curated so that only people who care about the content would be interested in the ads. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • My newsletter is making $2k per month with 7k subscribers – AMA
Fellow workspace design publisher here (https://officesnapshots.com) – Nice work! I started a home office site ~13 years ago and wasn't able to ever make it happen so I am glad to hear that someone has cracked the code. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • Open letter: Ban surveillance-based advertising
This is what we do at https://officesnapshots.com and it works pretty well: office furniture ads on office design content. - Source: Hacker News / almost 3 years ago

  • I want to create IMDB for Open source projects
There are a few: - https://openalternative.co/ - https://www.opensourcealternative.to/ - https://opensourcealternatives.org/ - https://www.btw.so/open-source-alternatives By just aggregating everything FOSS, doesn't mean its useful. Its useful in a certain context - such as searching for alternatives. If you are uncertain how to "plan the product", don't plan -> just start. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • I want to create IMDB for Open source projects
I've built https://openalternative.co a month ago, but it's pretty niched down to software/saas applications. I think a more general one for broader selection of open source software would also be nice to have. The code for OpenAlternative is on GitHub if you want to use some or take inspiration. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • How to Build Dynamic Breadcrumbs in Remix
If you're interested to see how breadcrumbs can be implemented in a real-world application, you can check out the OpenAlternative project, or check out the source code. - Source: dev.to / 3 months ago

I then picked the simplest name I could find and registered openalternative.co for $6.99. - Source: dev.to / 3 months ago
