If you can keep your total uploaded photos under 2gb, you can use dropbox for free, and choose the 1% of your invoice option with photoinvoice. Or you can look at something like smugmug.com which does it all for you, but the pricing varies from $7/mo to $42/mo (the price goes down considerably if you prepay for a whole year). I ended up using the free tier of fruux.com (CalDAV service) to sync tasks to iOS. Everything looked good in fruux but was off by +1 days in iOS, not sure why but it was an easy fix. Source: almost 2 years ago
Your original question was about how important it is to encrypt contacts and I think it depends. If you just want to keep your data out of Google's data collection hands, then there are other options to store/sync contacts and calendar data (but most are not E2EE).
