Try converting a few wavs and see if you notice the difference. Use a quality converter like the one in iTunes (uses the Fraunhofer codec which is superior to LAME) and set to Custom MP3, 44100, Stereo, YES Smart Adjustments, and NO filter frequencies below 10Hz. I have been working on cassette and open reel decks recently and I use a Behringer UCA usb audio interface with line out and line in RCAs, and AUDMes. It can generate tones, measure frequency response, analyze spectrum etc. For more detailed measurments I also have a usb oscilloscope, as that is more useful for exact level adjustment.
