Go to rent.com, trulia.com, and try to rent from a person who owns their apartment/condo vs. Renting from a management company. The owner may use rental management, but they are the ones to call the shots and ultimately make final decisions. There's a great website: renthop.com that I used to find off campus housing around the campus at the last minute. My roommates however had panicked way in the beginning because they thought we wouldn't be able to find a place, and instead got a spot where they're both paying $800 per person, per room, not including some utlities instead of sharing an apartment/townhome together as planned.
