Evernote was ok for a little bit, but the only thing it really did for me was search... Once I realized that I switched tactics. I organized my life into domains, and got okay at using grep to replace it. My saving grace that I would pay twice for is https://typora.io. Since you're specifically trying to write—a book, I guess—it may be worthwhile trying to find an app designed for that.
