I also use a QWERTY keyboard and I use a custom keyboard layout that maps alt-a to ä, alt-u to ü, alt-o to ö, alt-s to ß (plus the same for uppercase for the first 3). I’ve always set up a custom keyboard for exactly that! () on their own keys, [] on shift and {} above 0 and 9. It always struck me as the most natural alignment for prose and programming. They could have used the SIL Open Font License instead. People in the open source world are often already familiar with it, and resources like tl;dr Legal are available for it.
