It doesn't sound like there's anybody around with sufficient knowledge to properly administer Active Directory; so you should probably avoid it. It's a halfway house between a managed platform and your own VPS. Means you don't have to worry about security, vhosts, ssl certificates, restricting access etc... For PHP https://platform.sh has got a lot of traction, but it's notc cheap especially for small apps.
