  For fast searching, it usually requires indexing the files in question. There are a number of text-file indexing solutions, many of which use xapian, sphinx, or lucene/solr under the hood. Based on conditions (watching files/directories, cron jobs, new-mail triggers, etc), they'll add/remove files to the index, and you can then use a corresponding command to compose queries across that data. • Looking for a piece of software that would help me in writing a book. I haven't written much so I have no expectations. I found some fancy, full-featured app for Mac that costs $50, was wondering if there was anything FOSS with fewer features.

  Looks like you want something that integrates well with your workflow. The closest to your description seems to be Manuskript although I haven't used it. But your requirement of "keeping notes and frameworks and linking back and forth" should be possible by stitching together existing Linux tools using a syntax like markdown or asciidoc so that you can use any text editor to write your story and use external tools...
