I looked it up: Xonotic was the answer! It was actually quite fun, even though I had to compile from source to play on an outdated office server :) https://xonotic.org/. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 month ago

Xonotic is cool, first time fucking around with an FPS. Source: about 1 year ago
  • How is FreeSync under Linux?
Any specifics on which games? Does it work on any game? I tested Xonotic on a 144Hz monitor the other day and the highest FPS I got to see was ~90 with no tearing on Kubuntu liveiso but I was using Intel kaby lake integrated graphics, so I assume FreeSync was not at play here, even though the monitor supported it. • Anyone remember axis and allies?
There is also TripleA, which is open source and has a large variety of maps and rule variants. https://triplea-game.org/. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Humans Need Play
Side note: I really liked Axis and Allies, played it several times as a young adult with a few close friends. There is a nice open-source implementation of it, if you want to "play" instead of work. [0] However, it misses the social part. My advice would be to try all the official versions on TripleA (https://triplea-game.org/) to get a feel for the version you like before you spend any money on a new game. Source: over 1 year ago
