To remedy, I've been using this little app found from another thread. I keep this app open while running stepmania and it remap button presses solving the problem. The beartaria times app required no development/build from anyone in the bear community. They simply pay for existing tools/infrastructure. Similar to the uatv/vimeo debacle, beartaria times is simply an "app" running on the disciple media platform - disciplemedia.com.
