Yeah, for sure you can give It a try! Imo you have to use a lite desktop environment like xfce maybe . Hey I would suggest you start looking at the website mobbin.design - It should really help you identify what modern apps are looking like. In addition it allows you to filter screens by the different elements that they contain, which is very useful when you are creating a similiar product.
