I'm also a 45 yo. Dude who's spent a lot off time off the bike due to injury or illness. I don't race and I'd say I'm more competitive with myself than others. That hasn't stopped me from chasing real numbers / fitness on the bike. I'm still not particularly fast, but I'm at least as fit / fast as I was in my 20's when I was racing.
