Never buy the book, start writing the book, https://novelwriter.io/ ;). Source: over 1 year ago
Https://novelwriter.io/ is free and open source (I haven't used it, only know about it). Source: almost 2 years ago
NovelWriter for books is like building a dungeon in D&D I might add. All it needs is a map editor ;). Source: almost 2 years ago
Novelwriter almost hits the sweet spot, but misses some features and is written in python, which makes some features hard to implement due to the nature of the programming language. Source: almost 2 years ago
Try this software. It may well help you to write better -> novelWriter. Source: about 2 years ago
Alternatively, if you want Scrivener-like and are happy with open source projects, novelWriter scratches some of the same itch and is (a) free and (b) available on Linux, Windows, and macOS: it has a similar project-oriented interface to Scrivener, can export projects in HTML, Open Document, Markdown, Plain Text, or PDF, supports tagging and metadata, and uses Markdown for authoring. It's much less hot on... Source: about 2 years ago

Have you looked at yWriter, Skribisto, novelWriter, or Wavemaker? Source: over 2 years ago

The program in question is novelWriter. It is not yet available as flatpak, snap, or appimage. Source: over 2 years ago

Also, have you tried book writing software like https://novelwriter.io/ ? This one is FOSS, supports markdown, features to organize, cross-reference, etc. Source: over 2 years ago
However, as others have mentioned, some aspects of it are still bothersome (I see endless complaints about the complexity of the Compiler), and there do exist some really good free alternatives, like SmartEdit Writer and NovelWriter, which offer very similar functionally. Source: over 3 years ago
Https://novelwriter.io/ is another option, plus it is FOSS. Source: over 3 years ago
I haven't used it, but I have https://novelwriter.io/ bookmarked as a FOSS option, especially as it has markdown-like syntax. Source: almost 4 years ago
