  I just do my pleasantries and then share the British Council Flashcards for Kids page https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/flashcards - I use them even with adults. I ask them to chose a topic, or I just choose 'Food' or 'Home' as a starting point. Then I literally go through the flashcards one by one until I can tell whether they can read in English, what their pronunciation is like, and whether they know... Source: about 2 years ago

  2) If they are real beginners, whether they are adults or children, use some of these flashcards https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/flashcards and see if they can read the words and answer simple questions about the pictures.   HACK: If you want to save all of your current slack messages, sign up for https://orbit.love, connect it to slack, and then grab the messages from the API.
